Twelve GCI Students Win DJB Scholarship

Thursday, 29th of March 2017 was another colourful and memorable day in the history of Government College Ibadan, as twelve brilliant, diligent and indigent students from both the Junior and Senior Secondary Classes of the School were awarded with Scholarship awards.

The Scholarship award covers the tuition fees and all other levies, textbooks, school bag, pairs of school uniform and Senior Secondary Certificate Examination fees for each of the twelve students.

The Scholarship program was one of the programmes facilitated with Derek John Bullock Endowment Fund. Established in January 2012, the Derek John Bullock Foundation was aimed at perpetuating the legacy of the late Derek John Bullock (1926 - 2009) in secondary school education in Nigeria.

DJ Bullock, a principal in Government College Ibadan between 1960 and 1968, dedicated his entire life to imparting the very best secondary school education to his students, and also made it possible for a significant number of indigent students to attend schools in which he served by paying their tuitions from his own pocket.

The Scholarship presentation was done by the Oyo State Honourable Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela who admonished the recipients to keep up the pace, aspire for greater heights and be good ambassadors of their Alma Mata.

In attendance at the epoch making event were the BoT Chairman of DJB Endowment Foundation, Dr. Olutunde Oni (1954) and the Secretary of the Foundation, Mr. Samuel Iseniyi.

Other members of the Foundation at the event were Dr. Banwo Smith (1959), Mr Funso Onafowokan (1960) and Chief Olaleye Falore (1962).

The Patron of Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association, GCIOBA; Dr. Lekan Are (1948), Chairman of GCI Education Foundation Board, Mr. Yomi Jones (1963) and the GCIOBA Ibadan Branch Chairman, Engr. Femi Babalola (1975), alongside other students, teachers and Old Boys of the great citadel of learning all graced the occasion.

The host of the event which took place at the Assembly Hall of the School was the School Principal, Dr. B.T. Odekunle.
