GCI 1978 Set Hosts Career Day for GCI Students

image The 1978 Set of Government College Ibadan (GCI), Apata, on October 9, 2025, organized an inspiring Career Day program for SS1 students of the school. The event was designed to guide students towards making informed and purposeful decisions about their future academic and professional paths.
Held at the Assembly Hall, the program featured Dr. Deborah Demurin of the Faculty of Guidance and Counselling, Lead City University, as the guest speaker. In her insightful presentation, Dr. Demurin spoke extensively on the importance of self-discovery, goal setting, and intentional planning in shaping one’s career journey.
She urged the students to first understand who they are and identify what they truly aspire to become in life. According to her, “career success begins with clarity of purpose”—once students have discovered their passion or area of interest, they can then make deliberate choices that align with that vision.
Dr. Demurin also emphasized the critical role of subject selection in achieving career goals. She explained that with the recently revised national curriculum introduced by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) and other educational agencies, students now have a more streamlined and skill-oriented structure to guide their academic progress. The new curriculum reduces subject overload and promotes digital literacy, practical skills, and vocational awareness, making it more important than ever for students to select the right subject combinations from the onset.
She encouraged the students to seek advice from teachers and counselors, pay attention to their strengths and interests, and align their academic choices with their long-term goals, whether in science, arts, technology, or vocational fields.
In his remarks, the Principal of Government College Ibadan, Mr. Solomon O. Oladokun, commended the 1978 Set for their initiative and continued interest in the academic development of the students. He described the program as both timely and essential, noting that such engagements help bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world aspirations.
Also in attendance were Mr. Abayomi Atitebi, Chairman of the 1978 Set; Mr. Tola Obembe, National Vice President II of the Government College Ibadan Old Boys’ Association (GCIOBA) and a member of the 1978 Set; Mr. Dapo Adigun, and other members of the Set.
The event concluded with an interactive session where students asked questions and shared their ambitions. Many expressed gratitude to the organizers for the opportunity to gain clarity on their career paths.
The 1978 Set’s Career Day program not only provided practical guidance and motivation but also reinforced GCI’s long-standing tradition of mentorship, discipline, and excellence—values that continue to shape generations of students from the prestigious institution.
