1972 Set Flags Off its Golden Anniversary Project

Thursday, 30th June, 2022 was an indelible date in the annals of history of GCI as the seed of the GCI Sports hub was planted on the soil of Government College Ibadan by the 1972 Set of Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association.
The proposed GCI Sports hub will play host to many games and an Indoor Sports Complex. The 1972 Set is constructing one of the components of the hub, a Standard Lawn Tennis Court, with toilet facilities.

The Sports hub is situated opposite Vitafoam court, along the GCI Access Road.

Led by the Chairman of the golden Set, Ayo Akingbade ( 2426, Grier House), members of the Set gathered at the GCI Museum building, GCIOBA House for the flag off ceremony, before moving to the project site to turn the sod for the project. The Flag Off Ceremony compered by Bimbo Akinyemi (2428, Grier House, 1972 Set) had the GCIOBA National President, Olawale Babalakin (Grier, 1971) ably represented by the GCIOBA National Treasurer, Akin Orowale (Field, 1968), the Chairman of the GCIOBA Asset Management Committee, Dapo Sonola (Carr, 1970), as well as the Principal of Government College Ibadan, Mr. Peter Awodiran in attendance.

The Golden Set Chairman in his short Welcome Address appreciated the members of the Set for their agelong and impressive supports, and their enthusiasm on GCI course thus far. He noted that 50 years of togetherness and camaraderie is worthy of celebrations.
Seun Mabogunje (2462, Swanston House), Chairman of the Set's Golden Anniversary Planning Committee remarked that their preparations had long started before the Covid-19 Pandemic and gave thanks to God that the Set overcame the pandemic and bounced back better, stronger and healthier.

Kolade Folorunso (2459, Grier House) - Chairman of the Project Committee appreciated the Assets Management Committee for their cooperation and guidance on their Anniversary project. He assured the GCIOBA family that the project would come to fruition in due course and would be of classy and quality standard and well maintained.

Akin Orowale (Field House, 1968 Set) commended the 1972 Set for their prompt statutory contribution of #1,000,000.00 for the 2022 National Reunion, as well as their sponsorship of the 2022 Novelty Match and advert placement in the 2022 Anniversary brochure. He also delivered the goodwill message of the National President and felicitated the golden celebrants.

The AMC Chairman, Dapo Sonola (Carr House, 1970 Set) congratulated the Boys of GCI for yet another massive, exceptional and thoughtful sporting infrastructure coming to the school, courtesy of the Old Boys of the school, which no other secondary school in Nigeria could match. He charged them that while receiving the intervention in trust, they should always reciprocate the kind gesture when privileged to give back to their Alma Mater. He used the medium to advise the golden Set and all other Sets of GCIOBA to ensure that high quality projects are delivered to the school so that the donor would have little or no stress on the maintenance of such project in the long run. He reiterated the policy of Assets Management Committee that all donors are to also monitor and maintain their projects for five years in the first instance.

The Principal of the School, Mr. Peter Awodiran showered encomiums on the 1972 Set for their special delight in Sports. He appreciated them for their supports received at the 2022 Interhouse Sports competition of the school and also the facilitation of a mini Sports hub for the benefit of the school, and the GCI community at large.

Segun Olubowale (2482, Powell) -Chairman, 1972 Set 50th Anniversary Logistics Committee, Niyi Adekunle (2416, Carr) , Omoruan (2487, Field), Niyi Oredein (2488, Field) Dayo Amole (2434, Powell), Ibukun Ajibola (2424, Field), and Sina Fadugba (2449, Powell) all graced the event in their beautiful golden Anniversary regalia, alongside Dele Jegede (Grier, 1988 Set) - Member, GCIOBA Aseets Management Committee as well as the upper echelons of the GCI School Management, and some junior and senior students of the prestigious institution.
