Grier House Defends Title, Wins The 80th Inter House Athletics Competition

image History repeat itself again as Grier House, the defending champions wins the 80th Inter House Athletics Competition back to back. The Inter House Athletics Competitions held on Thursday, 28th of February, 2019 at the School Main Pitch was used to mark the 90th Anniversary of the prestigious school. It would be recalled that the School was founded on the 28th of February, 1929. The historic event was chaired by the GCIOBA National President, Bolanle Olawale Babalakin (Grier, 1971) who was ably represented by the First National President, Tola Obembe (1978). The Oyo State Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sport graced the event as the Special Guest of Honour while Mrs C.O. Bolaji, the Director of Schools, Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science & Technology was the Prize Distributor.

The inter House Athletics Competition featured a Full Parade by the Cadet boys of GCI, after which the five Houses - Swanston, Grier, Field, Carr and Powell Houses competed with one another in different sporting events at both junior and senior category. The events were Match Past, and various Track events such as 100m Junior Boys, 100m Intermediate, 100m Senior Boys, 200m Junior Boys, 200m Inetrmediate, 200m Senior Boys, 400m Senior Boys, 800m Senior Boys, 4 x 100m Senior Boys, High Jump Senior; and Thug of War.

Grier House took an early lead at the Heats with 168 points while Powell House came first from behind with 89 points. At the end of the competition, Grier House went on to win the Match Past, 100m Senior Race, 200m Senior Race, 400m Senior Race & 1500m Senior Race and had good points from other Track events, which all cummulated to 342 points and earned the Griersons the trophy. Swanston House, Carr House and Powell House were the first, second and third runners-up respectively while Field House took the 5th position.

Cutting of the 90th Anniversary cake, and relaunching of "The Rock Magazine" courtesy of the 1991-September Set were also part of the activities that took place to mark the 90th Anniversary of the school.

The Principal of the School and Host, Dr Tunde Odekunle (1976) in his remarks said that the competition is to inculcate the spirit of sportmanship in the students, develop healthy and progressive rivalry amongst Houses, build and nurture the sporting skills and talents in them, create fun, and strengthen their inter personal relationship. He appreciated the Old Boys Association of the School, Parents-Teachers Association, members of Staff, and the students for their unflinching support.
