Grier House Wins The 79th Inter-House Athletics Sports Competition

image Griersons were filled with undeniable ecstasy and laughter as they lifted the golden trophy at the 79th Inter House Athletics Sports Competition of Government College Ibadan which held on Wednesday, 21st of March, 2018 at the Colleges Main Pitch.

The event, chaired by the Pro Chancellor of Lead City University, Ibadan, Prof. Jide Owoeye, an Old Boy of the School, had different Track events ranging from Sprints, Middle Distance Race, Long Distance Race, and Relay Race for both Junior and Senior students of the five Houses (Swanston, Grier, Field, Carr and Powell Houses). Short Put and Discus were the Field events that took place. Match Past, majorly for the Junior Students, was also among the sporting events.

The Executive Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi was ably represented by the Honourable Commissioner of Youth and Sports, Barrister Abayomi Oke who is also an Old Boy of the School. The former Captain of Nigerian and West African Cricket Teams, Prof. Jide Bademosi (1953), and the Chairman of GCI Governing Board, Mr Banwo Smith (1959) were among the dignitaries at the event.

The Cadet Corps, as usual, had earlier entertained the distinguished guests, parents and students of the School; with their Full Parade, while the Oyo State Police Band was in attendance to supply the sonorous parade music. Members of the Oyo State Civil Defence Corps were on ground for security checks while the Red Cross Society of the School provided the health-related emergency needs.

Grier House had earlier thrashed their counterparts with a huge margin at the preliminary stage, scoring 246 point to beat their closest rival, Swanston House who had 208 points. They went on to defend their number one spot in the final competition by earning more points in the Match Past, Middle Distance Race, Relay Race than Swanston House. Although, Swanston House defeated the then seemingly overall champions in Cross Country Race and Sprints but the points earned were not enough to overcome the deficits earlier conceded. Griersons won with an overall 385 points.

Carr House came first from the rear. It would be recalled that the eaglets were the defending champions but fell to Grier House, their age-long rivals.

Swanston and Field Houses maintained their back to back second and third positions scoring an overall 341 and 269 points respectively. Powell House's victory in the Match Past couldn't see them through to the top, as they only moved up a bit from the last position in 2017 to the fourth position in 2018.

Adediran Idris, an SSS III Grierson who represented his House in the Long Distance Race, was awarded the Best Athlete of the School.
