Manna from the HSC Block Ceiling
MANNA FROM THE HSC BLOCK CEILING - THE FREE MILK AFFAIR.
My relationship with all my classmates was cordial, but that with three of them, Adenrele Daramola, Tunde Oremodu and Tolu Osonowo, was outstanding.
I recall playing football in my second year, with Denrele in the open porch of the HSC Block.
One of us kicked the ball into the ceiling and Denrele volunteered to go into the ceiling and retrieve it. He brought down the ball all right, but he also told us about a carton of Peak milk hidden in there.
Apparently, someone had raided the school store and had hidden the carton of Peak milk there.
We both went back into the ceiling and brought down the carton.
To our amazement, there were eight dozen tins of milk inside.
We were either afraid or too timid to keep the whole carton to ourselves, so we informed a collaborative senior, Kola Deko (1963), who took the carton from us, but graciously shared the contents into three parts.
He took one-third, while Denrele and I shared the remaining two-thirds equally.
For more than one month, we enjoyed free milk.
To this Day, the benefactor/owner never showed up or reported any loss to the Prefect - a case of finders are keepers.
