1991A Set embarks on a cleaning project at GCI
Following the Monthly Progress Report from the Government College Ibadan Principal, Dr. B.T. Odekunle, at the 451st meeting of the Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association Ibadan Branch, on Sunday, 9th of April, 2017; the report had it that the thick forest behind the old Form V Block now called Aso Rock by today's generation of GCI Students housing the Finalists (SSS III Students) has been causing a great havoc for both the students and the teachers of the school.
The vast thick forest links the School to the dilapidated fence of Queen School Ibadan and other parts of Oluyole Estate, Ibadan, weakening the defense forces of the School.
Apart from the fact that various reptiles and other wild animals inhabit this so called Sambisa Forest in GCI making the environment unsuitable for both living and learning, some unscrupulous GCI students and other students and thugs from neighbouring schools and streets have turned the bush into their niche where various nefarious activities are being carried out, and thereby distracting the students, distorting the process of learning and putting the whole school in threat.
In response to this part of the report, Oyamakin Samuel (8510, Carr, 1991A) - the 1991A Class Chairman promptly informed the Home Branch Chairman, Femi Babalola (3114, Carr, 1975) of the intention of his Class Set to clear the big bush. He said the driving force behind the project is to create a conducive learning environment for GCI Students, and pitched his tent with that of the great German-born American Architect Hermann J. Steinherr who quoted that "Great education is a combination of a supporting environment, dedicated teachers and students who take joy in learning".
He further said the project would also complements the efforts of the National Association in ensuring that the past glory of GCI is restored and the great citadel of learning emerges as a pearl amidst her peers.
The whole House showered encomiums on the Third Generation Class, while the School Principal specially appreciated the wonderful Boys of 1991A for supporting his vision to bring back the glory of GCI. The Home Branch Chairman urged all other Third Generation Sets to emulate the kind gesture shown by the young Set towards their Alma Mater.
1991A Set came into Government College Ibadan in January 1991, and has produced a lot of influential Old Boys dispersed across the globe, doing terrific exploits in their chosen professions and vocations.
