Oyo State Wins The 1st Prof. Jide Bademosi Cup


Oyo State - the Pacesetter State hosted her fellow Southwestern States for the maiden edition of SW-U/19 Cricket Tournament also known as The Jide Bademosi Cup organised in honour of the great iconic legend and ancient Old Boy of Government College Ibadan, Prof. Feyisara Olajide Bademosi - a distinguished retired Professor of Neurology.

The tournament which took place at the Cricket Oval of Obafemi Awolowo Stadium (formerly Liberty Stadium) in the ancient city of Ibadan was held between 19th and 23rd April, 2017. The tournament sponsored by Engr. Seye Fadahunsi's Energy and Mineral Resources Limited, EMR was aimed at providing enduring relationships filled with enduring memories for the young Cricketers, Students and Cricket enthusiasts on the verge of breaking onto the National Scene.

The final match played between Oyo State and Ogun State came up on Sunday, 23rd of April, 2017 and Oyo State set a good pace by winning the competition on its own soil.

A lot of dignitaries comprising both Old Boys and non Old Boys of Government College Ibadan from all walks of life graced the grand finale, among which were the President of the Africa Cricket Association and former President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Mr Kwesi Sagoe; renowned educationists and proprietors of Subuola Memorial Schools, Ibadan, Senior Chief Emiola Adesina (OON) and his wife; Prof. Femi Osofisan (Poet and 2016 Thalia Prize Award Winner), Dr Banwo Smith (Patron of Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association, GCIOBA), Chief Olaleye Falore (First National Vice President, GCIOBA), Prince Aderemi Adetowo, Mr Yanju Adegbite (Executive Director of Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State), Chief Gboyega Akin-Deko (Son of late GCIOBA Patron, Gabriel Akin-Deko), Engr. Rotimi Ogunjobi (Programmer and Technical Director of GCI Virtual Museum), Inspector Abiodun Odude (Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Police Command), Mr Adebola Ogunsina (1975 Class Set Chairman and Chairman, Oyo State Cricket Association), Engr. Femi Babalola (Chairman, GCIOBA Ibadan Branch), Chief Alafe-Aloko Femi, Barrister Abayomi Oke (Former Cricketer and Honourable Commissioner of Youths and Sport, Oyo State), Mr Samuel Iseniyi - the Administrative Secretary of GCIOBA and other members of GCIOBA, Ibadan Branch.

While delivering his closing remarks, the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mr Kolade Mosuro (Former Cricketer, and a Trustee of GCIOBA) appreciated everyone for deeming it fit to support the growth of Cricket in the Country and also the thanked the various sponsors of the epoch making event. He also commended Mr Okon Ukpong - the South West Coordinator of Cricket for the good job done in ensuring the smooth coordination of the tournament.

Prof. Jide Bademosi while presenting the trophy, certificate of participation and the prize to the winner of the tournament urged the young Cricketers to face their academics first and keep playing the game of Cricket.
