GCI And Great Expectations

Let us go to the model college
Let us go to the model college built on the rock
Let us visit the Rock
Let us visit Government College Ibadan

Government College Ibadan, I salute you
A college with imagination and vision
A college with a tradition and mission
A college that does its students proud
Your products serve to confirm the claim
I salute the rock
I salute the spring board to world fame
I salute Government College Ibadan

Government College Ibadan
Don't we all remember
The founding selection principle
With entrants selected from across the nation
Purely on merit
Merit that is devoid of colour or creed
Merit that is devoid of class or clan
It is on merit that the model college found its birth
To promote unity across the nation

Government College Ibadan
Don't we all remember
The famous warfront against indiscipline
Where you must not cross the lawn or read till dawn
Where acts of dishonesty are met with the stiffest penalty
Where prefects remain unchallenged and won't relent a bit
Where prefects tame your urges with a roar
Where all erring offenders are put on detention kit

Government College Ibadan
A trainer of civics and civility
In academics, you rule the waves
In sports yo excel them all
As a sport lover, you provide the love and the laughter
On the sports field you provide the fun and the friendship
You highly emphasize sports
Though not to the detriment of academics
Laughter is the best medicine you used to say
Little did we know we 'll need it all the way

By the time you went through the Rock
You emerged full of poise
You have been melted down and recast like a metal safe
A gentleman you must be and nothing but a gentleman
Now sprouts of the rock
The fruits would disperse around the nation
And preach the Gospel throughout the nation
And provide the right catalysts for the nation's development
To provide service without being servile

That was the way it was founded
That was the way it was
Until so soon ago when the wheels of government clogged
And things came crashing down
With the college tucked behind the rubble of old glorious self
With lawns unkempt and overgrown with weeds
The orchard left to grow wild in spite of the glorious sun
The lecture rooms dangerously dilapidated
The beakers and other laboratory apparatus full of flaws
Some roof tops caving in to admit lightning and thunder
And the doors gaping in for easy plunder
And the velvety green cricket pitch left bruised and bald

Government College Ibadan
You are certainly a far cry from glorious past
But in spite of the assault
You still retain your old charm
And you open up a floodgate of happy memories like a dam
Thus GCI is still gold
That has only lost some of its glitter of old
Now the celebrated model college has been spun but not spilled
It's lying limp, livid and crying for resuscitation
A little more rally within and without government
A little more effort by the old boys here and there
Will aid Government College's full restoration
For Government College Ibadan is not dead and will never die
No matter how stormy the sea
Government College is solidly built on the rock
To last and stand forever.
